Technique Seminar Reviews:

  • Sample from FAKTR-PM Review:

At the 2010 Chiropractic Sport Sciences Symposium I attended a 90 minute presentation on FAKTR-PM by co-founder Greg Doerr, DC, CCSP. My thoughts and commentary are based on this presentation, speaking with doctors that practiced the technique and personal experience and research.

The following quote is directly from faktr-pm.com: "FAKTR-PM stands for "Functional And Kinetic Treatment with Rehabilitation, Provocation and Motion." It was developed to help speed recovery from chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes and has also been shown to work extremely well on acute musculoskeletal/fascial conditions."

...Hence the combination of exercise/rehab with instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization is a way to bombard the CNS and improve function. Again the peripheral pathology is downplayed in favor of "firing up" neurology...

...FAKTR-PM is also somewhat agnostic on soft tissue treatment specifics. They list 10 or so different types and encourage you to use any of them as they all work. Only someone working on a reflex model would believe this. The specifics are important and should not be undervalued...

  • Sample from Vojta Principles of Reflex Locomotion Review:

Over the past several years there has been tremendous interest in the work of Vaclav Vojta (1917-2002) a Czechoslovakian neurologist specializing in the problems of motor rehabilitation. Many chiropractic rehabilitation specialists have embraced this model for treatment of musculoskeletal (MS) disorders.

Curious to see what this work was all about, I recently attended a Reflex Locomotion according to Vojta seminar and workshop. This was a 12 hour introductory course. I have combined this course information with many hours of my own research and practice to bring you the following report.

...Vojta therapy goals:

1.      Improve automatic control of body posture and movement.

2.      Restore ideal movement and balance to the motor system.

Treatment Outline:

The instructor stated that he uses Vojta therapy on a minority of his patients, preferring conventional manipulation and manual therapy first. A Vojta treatment will usually take approximately 20 minutes...

...These reflex stimulation zones are definitely triggering ingrained CNS reflexes. To varying degrees, patients experienced involuntary movements during treatment in a manner predicted by the developmental stages. It became clear that remnants of these developmental stages are indeed present and accessible in normal adults...

...With a few exceptions, I found it very hard to believe that developmentally normal adults suffer MS problems because of missed or insufficient stages of development...

Research Reviews:

  • Knee Adduction Moment: Load, Symptoms and Pathology Progression

The Knee Adduction Moment (KAM) is a very sophisticated measurement of the load placed on the medial and lateral tibiofemoral compartments during walking. Unfortunately, measuring the KAM can't be done in the provider's office as it requires force plates, four optoelectric cameras and specialized software. The good news is we can learn a lot from the results of the research.

Thorp et al. identified a clear biomechanical distinction between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients with mild osteoarthritis. Patients that experienced pain had a higher...

...To make things even more interesting, Schnitzer et al.1 demonstrated that the use of NSAIDs had a twofold effect in patients with mild knee osteoarthritis...

...This clearly demonstrates that pain serves a protective function by altering biomechanics and load. This further supports the Integrative Diagnosis core concept that pain is a load management tool. Providers and patients need to strongly weigh the pros (less pain) and cons (increased load) of symptom management strategies, as they could produce increased loads and progression of pathology...

...This is a major part of why the Integrative Diagnosis system insists the primary goal of treatment is a sustainable reduction in dysfunction...

...To add even more tasty icing to our cake, Miyazaki et al. demonstrated that knee load (measured by KAM) can predict radiographic progression of osteoarthritis at 6 year follow up...
